George Wein's Newport Jazz Festival Allstars - Midnight Concert In Paris (BL 7665)
Jazz doesn't get more glamorous than this! Recorded live at the Olympia Theatre in Paris on 15 April 1961, this wonderful album captures pianist and Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein leading a superb all-star group through a swinging, relaxed programme in the heart of the French capital. The lineup is magnificent — Ruby Braff on trumpet, the velvet-toned Vic Dickenson on trombone, the wonderfully idiosyncratic Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, and Jimmy Woode on bass. Together they deliver traditional jazz and swing in a manner that's utterly free of cliché — open, inventive, and brimming with the special magic that only live music can produce.

Cal Collins - Cal Collins In San Francisco (CJ-71)
Prepare to fall in love with one of jazz's most under-celebrated guitarists! Recorded in 1978 for Concord Jazz, this wonderful trio set captures Cal Collins in relaxed, inspired form alongside bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Collins was a self-taught guitarist who learned his art on the streets and farms of Indiana before becoming Benny Goodman's guitarist in 1976, and his straight-ahead bop playing with deep swing-era roots is an absolute delight. Highlights include Miles Davis's Blue Haze, Miles' Theme, Sometimes I'm Happy, and a lovely reading of So What. Effortlessly swinging, deeply musical, and hugely enjoyable.

Ross Tompkins - Ross Tompkins And Good Friends (CJ-65)
What a warm, swinging gem from Concord Jazz! Recorded in Hollywood in 1978, this cool jazz delight teams versatile pianist Ross Tompkins — best known to many as a stalwart of The Tonight Show Band — with the tremendously expressive tenor saxophone of Al Cohn, plus a superb rhythm section of bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Nick Ceroli. Erroll Garner - Gone-Garner-Gonest (COL CL 617)
What a title — and what an album! Released on Columbia Records in 1955, Gone-Garner-Gonest is Erroll Garner in full, glorious flight, delivering a magnificent set of standards including I Can't Get Started, Yesterdays, Lullaby In Rhythm, and Bewitched. His unclassifiable piano style — simultaneously rooted in swing and open to modern jazz — is utterly compelling throughout. Garner had the remarkable ability to record three albums in a single day, all in colourful first takes, and the spontaneous energy and invention that characterises this album makes it feel like a live, in-the-moment experience every time the needle drops.

Erroll Garner - Campus Concert (SE4361)
Bittersweet and absolutely beautiful, Campus Concert holds the distinction of being the final live album Erroll Garner released during his lifetime! Released on MGM Records in 1966 and recorded in 1962, it features the pianist in wonderful form, accompanied by his classic trio and performing for an enthusiastic audience of mostly young fans. Eight jazz standards plus one original make up a programme delivered with Garner's trademark combination of swing-era grandeur and bebop awareness. His ability to sit at the piano and play magnificently without ever reading a note of music was a genuine marvel — and this record proves it gloriously.

Erroll Garner - Garnering (MG 36026)
One of the earliest and most delightful Erroll Garner albums to collect, Garnering was released on EmArcy Records in 1955, drawing on studio sessions recorded in New York in 1949 and 1950. Accompanied by bassist John Simmons and drummer Harold 'Doc' West, Garner treats a varied programme — including Deep Purple, Lazy River, Jitterbug Waltz, and the playfully mischievous Scatterbrain — to his signature orchestral, swing-drenched piano style. Every track is freshly minted and completely alive, a testament to the fact that Garner, as one admirer famously noted, never recorded an uninspired solo in his entire career.
